BESCOM Electricity Connection for Your New Home

Getting a new BESCOM (Bangalore Electricity Supply Company Limited) connection and increasing the sanctioned load for an EV charger involves specific procedures and documentation.1 Here is a detailed breakdown of the steps.

Part 1: How to Get a New BESCOM Connection for a Home

The process for a new electricity connection is largely online and requires you to have the necessary building and property documents in place.2

  1. Obtain Occupancy Certificate (OC): A crucial first step is to get the Occupancy Certificate (OC) for your new house from the BBMP. Without a valid OC, BESCOM will not provide a permanent electricity connection.3 This is a recent and strictly enforced rule to curb unauthorized constructions.4

  2. Gather Required Documents: Prepare all the necessary documents, which include:

    • Proof of Ownership: This can be your Khata Certificate and Extract, Sale Deed, or the latest property tax paid receipt.5

    • Sanctioned Building Plan: A copy of the plan approved by the BBMP.6

    • Wiring Certificate: A completion-cum-test report and wiring diagram signed by a government-approved Licensed Electrical Contractor.7

    • Occupancy Certificate (OC): The mandatory document from the BBMP.8

    • Identity Proof: Aadhar card, PAN card, Voter ID, or Passport of the owner.9

    • Passport-size Photos: Of the property owner.10

    • Application Form: The official "A Form" for domestic electricity connection.11 This can be filled out online.

  3. Online Application:

    • Visit the official BESCOM website.12

    • Go to the "New Connection" section.13

    • Fill out the online application form with all your personal, property, and power supply details.14

    • Specify the required load in kilowatts (kW).15 For a standard home, this is typically 3-5 kW.

    • Upload all the documents you have prepared.16

  4. Verification and Site Inspection:

    • Once you submit the online application, a registration number will be generated for tracking.17

    • A BESCOM official (field officer or Assistant Engineer) will visit your property to verify the documents and conduct a site inspection.18 They will check the location, the proposed meter position, and the wiring as per the submitted plan.

  5. Payment and Installation:

    • After the verification and inspection are complete, you will receive a demand note for the required payments. These include meter security deposit, initial security deposit based on the sanctioned load, service line charges, and other fees.19

    • You can pay these charges online or at a BESCOM sub-divisional office.

    • Once the payment is confirmed, a work order is issued.

    • A BESCOM engineer will then visit your property to install the meter and provide the final connection.

Part 2: Increasing Sanctioned Load for a 7kW EV Charger

A 7 kW EV charger is a significant load and is a common requirement for new EV owners. Your existing sanctioned load, which is typically around 3-5 kW for a standard home, may not be sufficient to handle it along with other household appliances. Here's how to get more load.

Option A: Enhancing the Existing Connection

This is the most common and straightforward option for existing BESCOM customers.

  1. Determine Required Load:

    • A 7 kW charger needs at least 7 kW of dedicated power.

    • Add this to your existing household load. For example, if your current sanctioned load is 5 kW, you'll need to increase it to at least 12 kW (5 kW household + 7 kW EV charger).

    • You may also need to upgrade your connection from a single-phase to a three-phase connection if your total load exceeds the single-phase limit (typically 5-7 kW).

  2. Application for Load Enhancement:

    • Log in to the BESCOM consumer portal.20

    • Navigate to the "Load Enhancement" service request section.21

    • Fill out the online form, providing your existing RR number and the new total sanctioned load you require.22

    • Upload the necessary documents, which may include a wiring diagram and a letter stating the purpose of the load enhancement (i.e., for an EV charger).23

    • You may need to engage a licensed electrical contractor to prepare the new wiring and a safety certificate for the increased load.24

  3. Site Inspection and Technical Upgrades:

    • A BESCOM official will inspect your home's electrical system to ensure it can handle the increased load.25

    • You may need to upgrade your main circuit breaker (MCB) and electrical cables.26 The official will advise you on the required technical changes.

    • The existing energy meter may also need to be replaced with a new one that can handle the higher load.27

  4. Payment and Final Approval:

    • After the inspection, you will receive an estimate for the additional fees and charges, which are calculated based on the difference between your old and new sanctioned load.

    • Pay the fees online or at a BESCOM office.28

    • Once the payment is verified, BESCOM will issue a new work order for the final connection and meter replacement.

Option B: Getting a Separate Connection for the EV Charger

While this is less common for individual homes, it is an option, especially in larger multi-dwelling units or if you want to separate your EV charging costs from your household bills.

  • BESCOM has a specific LT6(c) tariff for Electric Vehicle Charging Stations. This tariff is often subsidized and can be more cost-effective for high-volume charging.

  • The application process is similar to a new connection, but you specify the purpose as "EV charging station" and apply for the new connection under the LT6(c) tariff.

  • You will be provided with a separate meter, which ensures you pay the dedicated EV tariff for your charging consumption.
